ENVIRONMENT & NATURE

Our company’s activities will always have certain negative effects on the environment and nature. However, one of Jack Wolfskin’s prime company objectives is to minimize our ecological footprint and, specifically, to achieve a 40% reduction in our CO2 emissions by 2011 compared to average emissions from the years 2006/2007. In the pursuit of this objective, avoidance always takes precedent over substitution and compensation.

To help achieve this, we have developed a comprehensive catalogue of measures designed to help us significantly reduce our impact on the environment:

  • Various building projects at the company headquarters in Idstein as well as construction of a new logistics centre in Neu Wulmstorf have already been realised.

  • Installation of a photovoltaic system on the roof to facilitate environmentally friendly electricity production was completed both in Idstein and in Neu Wulmstorf.

  • The industrial water for the company’s own sports hall will be heated by a solar system.

  • The light sources in all buildings used by the company have been replaced with energy-saving bulbs.

  • The power supply in the company headquarters in Idstein was switched over to green energy on 1 April 2008 by GREENPEACE ENERGY. This represents an annual saving of around 275 t CO2 per year.

  • GREENPEACE ENERGY was also selected for the new european distribution centre in Neu Wulmstorf; the annual savings potential is around 1028 t CO2 per year.

  • The field service offices as well as the seven brand stores operated by Jack Wolfskin itself have also been switched over to green electricity by GREENPEACE ENERGY.
In total, by switiching to green electricity, the company`s own climate footprint will be reduced by approximately 1302 t CO2 per year.

  • The franchise holders who operate the Jack Wolfskin stores are expected to switch over to green electricity as well. All new franchise agreements provide this.

  • Virtualisation of servers, allowing the company to save around 50% of the energy consumed by the server by using several virtual servers on a physical computer.

  • Almost the entire paper consumption in all corporate sites has been switched over to 100% recycling paper. This applies for printer paper, all catalogues, brochures, posters, product packaging, etc. In cases where recycling paper cannot be used, so-called FSC-certified (Forest Stewardship Council) paper is used where possible.

  • Only energy-efficient end devices are being purchased.

  • A video conference system was introduced in 2009 specifically to replace many short trips and in this way fly less.

  • Through complete restructuring of the supply chain, the ratio of air shipments to the overall shipment volume will be reduced by approximately 50%. The goal is to avoid air shipments as completely as possible in the future
