ANTELOPE CANYON

With its spectacular sandstone formations, Antelope Canyon has received a lot of hype through social media. Nevertheless, it is worth a visit.

Antelope Canyon in northeastern Arizona is located in the territory of the indigenous Navajo tribe.

The upper and lower canyon is only accessible with guided tours. The northern canyon, however, can be explored individually or by boat.

The crevices in the ground were formed by water from Antelope Creek, which only carries water after flash floods and has carved its way through the land over millions of years.

The Navajo name for Upper Antelope Canyon is Tsé bighánílíní, which means 'the place where water runs through rocks'.

Antelope Canyon became known to hundreds of million people in 2009 when Microsoft's Windows 7 included a selection of desktop wallpapers featuring the incredible rock formations.

Walking through these magical formations glowing in shades of yellow, orange, red, and purple, you feel like being inside a petrified lava lamp.

Beams of light shining through the narrow cracks overhead, illuminating millions of floating dust specks, are a popular photo motif.

The Australian photographer Peter Lik shot his work 'Phantom' here, which, with a price tag of 6.5 million dollars, was (arguably) considered the most expensive photo in the world.

Many visitors come primarily for the perfect Instagram picture. Thus, at the beginning of the tour, guides recommend the iPhone's 'Vivid Warm' filter for best results.
