Kids' Softshell Jackets: Wind Protection and Freedom of Movement
A softshell jacket keeps children moving comfortably in the wind and light rain - without the stiffness of a waterproof shell or the bulk of a winter jacket. Our kids' range uses TEXASHIELD CORE throughout: wind-resistant, water-repellent and breathable, with stretch for unrestricted movement during active play. All styles include reflective details for better visibility on the school run and in low light, and several carry the bluesign® certification for responsible material production. The range covers sizes 92 to 176.
Jacket or Coat: Which Style Fits When?
The length and construction determines how much coverage and warmth the garment provides.
Softshell jackets are the lighter, more versatile option - at as little as 200g, they suit the school run, playground use and active day hikes where freedom of movement matters more than extended coverage. The stretch material moves with children rather than against them, and the fixed hood provides quick protection when conditions change. One style uses a particularly elastic construction specifically designed for unrestricted movement during climbing, scrambling and fast-paced outdoor activity.
Softshell coats extend coverage to the hips and thighs - more protection for longer time outdoors, cooler autumn conditions or children who prefer more warmth without layering. A two-way zip makes the coat easy to put on and take off independently, and the longer cut stays in place during active movement without riding up.
Both styles use TEXASHIELD CORE with a stretch component, fixed hood, reflective details and zip pockets - the difference is purely in the length and the level of coverage.
What Makes a Good Kids' Softshell?
TEXASHIELD CORE blocks wind and repels light rain while remaining breathable - so children stay comfortable during active play without overheating. It is not fully waterproof: for sustained rain or puddle jumping, a dedicated waterproof rain jacket is the more reliable option.
Stretch construction across all styles allows a full range of movement - arms raised, crouching, climbing - without the jacket pulling or restricting. This matters particularly for younger children who move unpredictably and need their clothing to keep up.
Reflective details improve visibility in low light and at dusk - practical for early school runs and darker autumn afternoons when children are outdoors after school.
bluesign® certification on several styles confirms responsible use of resources and chemicals during production.
FAQ
What is the difference between a softshell jacket and a rain jacket for kids?
A softshell jacket is wind-resistant and water-repellent - it handles light rain and drizzle well but is not designed for sustained downpours. A rain jacket uses a fully waterproof membrane such as TEXAPORE CORE and keeps children completely dry in persistent rain. For unpredictable weather, a softshell is the more versatile everyday option; for reliably wet conditions, a rain jacket is the better choice.
Can kids wear a softshell jacket to school?
Yes. The lightweight jacket styles in this range are well suited to the school run and everyday outdoor use. They are light enough to carry in a school bag, move freely during playground activity and provide wind and light rain protection on the commute. Reflective details add visibility during darker mornings and afternoons.
What should children wear under a softshell jacket?
On mild days, a long-sleeved base layer or lightweight fleece is enough. On colder days, a fleece midlayer adds warmth without bulk - the softshell's stretch construction accommodates an extra layer without restricting movement. For very cold conditions, the softshell works best as a mid or outer layer within a full three-layer system.
Are the jackets suitable for year-round use?
Softshell jackets work well in spring, autumn and mild winter conditions. In summer, they can feel warm for sustained activity; in heavy winter rain or snow, a waterproof jacket provides more reliable protection. As a transitional layer or windbreaker for three seasons, they cover most everyday outdoor needs for active children.
